Last Day in Hamburg

June 13
We were all pretty exhausted from the day before still and the weather was forecasted to be rainy so we decided to take it a little easy with our day’s schedule.  Going to the Hamburg Museum exactly fit with how we all were feeling.  Anna and Alex had some studying to do so they would spend their day at the university while Irene, Brian and I would go out and about.

The subway ride was a little bit interesting, or at least it was very interesting to me because I don’t take the subway every day.  At the first subway stop after we boarded the doors opened and in stepped two men speaking Russian to each other.  The doors closed, one of the men turned on a speaker and the other assembled a saxophone.  It was a flash jazz mob (2 person), as the music played out of the speaker, one man played his saxophone and the other sang.  No sooner had they begun the subway had arrived at the next stop and they quickly disassembled their show and departed the from the subway car.  With a little bit of a walk from the subway station we arrived at the Hamburg Museum.

The Hamburg Museum was spectacular.  However I do think I say that with a lot of bias because I am a person who really enjoys history and museums.  The museum did an excellent job with their displays using very detailed models, exhibits, and projector displays on the development throughout Hamburg’s history.  After spending a few hours in the museum our hunger drove us to find a restaurant to eat some lunch.  We found a restaurant/brewery that makes craft beer like in America and settled down to eat.  And then it began to rain.

We dined on our food and just continued to drink beer since the rain was keeping us put (oh bummer, right?).  Eventually Alex and Anna met up with us at the restaurant and we talked about our enjoyment of the museum.   Also there was a bachelor party going on at the table next to us and the bachelor all dressed up in a Popeye costume.  He tried to sell us a potato as part of his duty if he ever wants to get out of his costume, an experience that is both very funny and embarrassing for him.  The rain subsided and we returned to Alex’s apartment to rest up a bit before deciding  our evening plans.
Alex and Anna prepared us a simple but very delicious dinner of homemade tomato soup and quiche.  We all sat in a circle on the floor of Alex’s office as we ate our dinner while drinking some whiskey cocktails that Alex had prepared.  Around midnight Alex and I went on a walk while drinking a few beers and we reminisced the last time that we were both in Europe together in Barcelona.  We wondered back about an hour later.

Tomorrow Irene, Brian and I part ways with Anna and Alex and leave for Lubeck.
